A breakout is when price moves above a key resistance level or below a key support level, often accompanied by increased volume. High-quality breakouts share these characteristics: volume at least 1.5ร average at breakout bar, clean consolidation period before the break, and a catalyst (earnings, news, sector rotation) that justifies the move.
This demo data shows that QQQ ETF breakouts significantly underperformed individual stock breakouts. Sector-specific catalysts appear to be more meaningful than broad market breakouts for this style of trading.
